If you think your mom will not appreciate a letter you are probably wrong. In fact, writing Mom a letter is one of our best Mother’s Day gift ideas.
For college age children or older children, a letter can become one of your mother’s most cherished gifts. As an example, when I was in college I could not make it home for Mother’s Day one year. Instead, I sent my mother a very personal letter sharing with her all the precious memories I had of my childhood. I wrote about the ballet recital when she took the picture of me out of step and waving to her. I included a copy of the picture. I wrote about the horribly fluffy dress she made me wear to my first piano recital. I included a picture of the dress. I wrote about how she was always there for me when Wesley broke my heart in the tenth grade. And, yes, I included a picture of Wesley. Anyway, you get the idea.
Some years later, well into my adult years, I wrote a second letter starting where the first letter ended. Of course, I included several pictures as I reminded her of the advice she gave me about my children and all she had taught me.
Now, you may think that I was being cheap and the few pennies I spent for the stationery and the stamp. But, let me tell you, after my mother passed away I was cleaning out her house and going through her personal items when I discovered a satin pouch that was neatly tied with a bow. I almost felt as if I were invading her personal space when I opened the pouch. But, I did.
Inside the pouch were the two letters I had written to my mother for Mother’s Day. She had kept them for years and years and years. They were neatly folded inside the envelopes they had arrived in. I was amazed that she had kept them for decades. I knew she had read them more than once. In fact, from the wear around the edges of the paper and the slight tear along the side of one the envelopes I knew she had read those letters time and time again.
Then I thought of the cards and letters my children have sent me over the years. And, yes! I keep all of them neatly folded in a small box.
Sometimes the greatest treasures in a mom’s life isn’t how much money you spend, but the time you spend saying “thank you.”
