Mother’s Day gifts have been a tradition since its designation as a national holiday in 1914. It is a special day and well deserved. Mothers have been the backbone of the family since the concept of family began.
The tradition of Mother’s Day gifts was a natural occurrence. Children and fathers have been giving presents that are particularly meaningful for moms since 1914. Prior to that time the mother’s birthday was the primary celebration day for that special lady in all our lives. But, mothers have given so much that they deserve a day honoring them for all they do for the family. Let’s face it, mothers are the glue that keeps the family unit together.
Mother’s Day gifts do not have to be expensive to be meaningful. The main idea behind the recognition should be that it has a special significance for the mother. For example, little children can make a handmade surprise for Mom. They can color a picture or draw a picture of Mom and the family. Kids who are a little older can make Mom a special gift from clay or papier mache. Mothers do not base the value on the gift on the price, but on the thought that goes into it.
Fathers can easily create a bond with the kids, especially the younger ones, by helping them create a special Mother’s Day gift with the little ones. Perhaps, an afternoon alone with the kids while Mom is out shopping will provide the time to draw a picture or make a Mother’s Day card. As the kids get a little older Dad can start a tradition with a bracelet or necklace that the kids can select a charm or pendant for each year.
As the children get older and begin to select gifts on their own, it is important that they realize that Mom cares about the thought put into the gift more than the price of the gift. The father should encourage the older children to select something special for Mom that will have meaning for years to come. Moms always keep the gifts and the cards in a special place.
The one thing to remember is that Mother’s Day gifts from the heart and the little ones’ hands have the most meaning.
