Young boys love to create Mother’s Day gifts. One of the best ideas for the young man is to paint a special box for his mother. It isn’t too difficult and the youngster will enjoy creating something for mom.
Dad should go to the local craft store and purchase a small wooden box with a hinged top. That is, unless Dad is handy with tools and can make a small wood box. Either way, the dad can prepare the box for painting. Most boxes purchased from craft stores need a little sanding with very fine sandpaper. Dad can assist the youngster if the little one wishes to do it himself.
Once the box is prepared for painting, allow the child to paint the box with acrylic paints. They will wash out if the little one gets paint on his clothes and will wash off hands with soap and water. The paints are inexpensive, usually less than a dollar for a small container of color. Allow the youngster to select the colors.
Maybe Dad can direct the child’s choices by pointing out colors that Mom likes. Most clerks in craft stores are knowledgeable about their products so ask for help if necessary. It is worth remembering that for the basics when painting any object, no more than three distinct colors are usually selected. Any other colors should probably be shades of the primary colors. However, if the child wishes to select multiple colors it is our bet that Mom will love it.
Allow the child to paint the box. Dad can probably finish the inside to make certain that the colors from the inside stay on the inside. Most interiors of boxes are one solid color. Give the child free rein when designing the outside of the box. Allow the box to dry completely.
Dad or the child with Dad’s supervision should spray the finished painted box with a satin or gloss polycrylic or acrylic clear spray to preserve the finish. Spray sparingly so as not to create runs. Repeat the spraying process several times until there is a depth to the appearance of the box. Be sure to allow the clear finish to dry completely between coats.
When all the painting and final coating has been completed, add the hinges.
This is a gift that both father and son can enjoy making for Mom. It is definitely a Mother’s Day gift that Mom will treasure for years to come.
