This year is a tough time economically for most of us. However, we can give mom a gift of life and hope this Mother’s Day. One of the best inexpensive (cheap) Mother’s Day gift ideas is a bowl of flowering bulbs. It is easy to make and will look very professional for under $10.00
This gift may require a trip to the dollar store for a clear glass bowl. That is if you don’t have one handy. Once you have the bowl, either find natural smooth medium sized rocks or pebbles or purchase a bag at a discount store. Most can be found in the craft section. Or, for a few dollars more you can purchase colored pebbles in the pet (fish) department.
Take a stroll through the garden department of a home improvement store or a big box store to find a bag of bulbs. Select flowering bulbs that will not grow too tall such as daffodils or tulips, hyacinths or other available bulbs.
Fill the bowl with the pebbles, stopping about an inch or two from the top. Push the bulbs down into the rocks, deeps enough to secure them. Add water up to the base of the bulbs.
Within a few days green will begin to sprout. Within a month or so the bulbs will be in full bloom.
Some families have each child make a bulb bowl for mom. Others are very particular about matching colored rocks from the pet department to the colors in Mom’s bedroom or in the kitchen.
While the bulb bowl can be started now, it is suggested that the bulbs be placed in the bowl (with water) about a week before Mother’s Day. Be sure to include a picture of the flowers so mom will know what to expect.
This inexpensive and simple bulb bowl will give mom months of joy as the bulbs grow and bloom. This is also a nice Mother’s Day gift for the grandmother or a friend who is dear to you.
